Refaat Alareer was a poet, professor of literature and public intellectual from Gaza, Palestine, who was assassinated in December 2023 by the Israeli occupation. This book preserves the entirety of Refaat's instagram account, started nine years before his death, as well as thirteen of his poems. These glimpses into everyday life in Gaza are organized thematically—family, academia, food, nature, memes, musings, and more—set against the overshadowing theme of everyday life in Gaza: surviving under violent occupation. Bringing these images from the digital sphere to paper, lest his online account disappear, is an effort to honor the memory of Refaat Alareer, who stood up for Gaza and told us: “If I must die, you must live to tell my story.”
