Stories from a Soap Merchant
I remember when I was in primary school , I was going to be on a long bus ride from the Central Valley to Disney Land for an end of the year trip. I'm not sure where there idea arose, if my dad suggested it, or I thought of it myself but I needed some money for food and other fun things while at Disney Land . My parents ran taco trucks and we had an old corrugated metal barn in the back of our house which my dad converted into to his warehouse with walk-in refrigerator and freezer and shelves with all the things that aren't very healthy for you. before the trip i went into the warehouse with my backpack and filled the bag with snickers, 100 grand bars, peanut-butter cups and what ever was in stock that i thought my friends would like . On the ride up to Disney land it wasn't a hard product to push amongst my peers as word got around i was selling candy for a dollar. I remember having about 80 dollars by the time we arrived in the late 90's which was a nice chunk of change for a day at Disney and a bus full of hyped-up-on-sugar-12-year-olds. I probably spent the money on food and little trinkets that have been lost or ended up in a land fill at this point but the memory has stuck with me all these years. Selling things to friends was fun, it's also what my dad did and he loved it. He worked 7 days a week mostly feeding the community and providing for his family. I grew up watching him hang with customers all day as they waited for their food to be made, telling stories, laughing and having a good time. He also never turned anyone away for lack of funds. I've gone through many love hate battles with the entrepreneurial spirit my dad passed down to me. The capitalist system is completely fucked and I believe we all have the human right to be free of war and bombs and have food and shelter and clean water. It's dumb i even write this in the year 2025.
Selling Nabulsi soap makes me feel good, mostly (sometimes I run into people who tell me to fuck off because I'm supporting Palestine). I love being able to share about a beautiful soap made for centuries in Palestine and my favorite part is when people see me and yell "soap guy, I need two more bars!" fuck amazon and if you can get the soap locally you should check if your Middle Eastern market has them and if they don't maybe we can ship them in bulk and get this soap more known in your communities. I hope to one day to visit the soap factories and meet with some of the people I've been talking to who have been patient and helpful in getting soap to us here and to see how its made with my own eyes and to smell the wonderful scent of fresh Nabulsi soap . Palestine will be free, truth and light will prevail.
